THERE’S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS…
|
The Exhibition opened with a convivial start on Friday evening in
the company of about 120 members and guests. 47 members contributed 105 diverse
and delightful works. On viewing the works for the first time, Paul
Delprat our honoured patron said “These are the works of people who have been
having a good time.” It is a high quality exhibition, comprising works which
not only plumb the serious aspects of human existence, but also, reflect light
heartedness and humour which are an essential part of life, so often lacking in
artistic work which too often takes itself too seriously. Paul Delprat’s
speech introducing the Hon. Joe Hockey was another masterpiece of humour in
which he also tendered tongue in cheek advice to Mr Hockey. For example,
given that artists live long and happy lives, why not propose that “artists
materials be on the medical benefits”? Mr Hockey, in officially opening the exhibition, delivered an interesting personal reflection as to his interest in the arts. He disclosed that the government spends each year substantially more on the arts and culture than is spent on sport. He also expressed the hope that existing buildings and facilities around North Sydney may one day be used for the display or encouragement of the creative arts. Exhibitions do not just happen. They require a good deal of hard work in planning, preparation and publicity. The committee was somewhat depleted in the final days leading up to the opening due to prior commitments and illness. Special thankyous are due to Committee members Jan Hook, John Grant, Geoff Brandon and also to Glenda Wong who was battling with influenza, and to Bryan Besley and Julie Keech for their dedication and assistance. Thank you also to those who manned the delivery desks, (Jan Hook, Shirley Perrett, Betty Green, Margot Freimann, Jill Swart, John Grant, Elaine Romalis and Julie Keech), the hanging of the works,(Bryan Besley, Deiter Beck, Willie Pleli, John Eldershaw, John Clutterbuck, John Grant, Geoff Brandon, Peter Scott and Max Coleman), the preparation of the catalogue and labels, the catering for the Opening (Julie Keech and Jan Hook). |
Once again this year, our efforts in getting the
exhibition off the ground have been greatly assisted by the willing and able
staff of the North Sydney Council, particularly Anna Warren and
Denise Smith who have been most helpful and encouraging. We are most grateful to Council for its generous provision of the Hutley Hall. The Mayor of North Sydney was unable to attend our opening as she was absent on vacation. However, we were delighted that Councillor Trent Zimmerman attended and brought a word of greeting on behalf of the Council at our opening ceremony. This is now the third year we have been able to occupy Hutley Hall for our exhibition. This happily reflects the composition of our Society. Although our focus is primarily on Mosman, about 40% of our growing membership includes residents of North Sydney and surrounding suburbs. Our exhibitors are Suzanne Alexander, Carlos Barrios, Erika Beck, Bryan Besley, Geoffrey Brandon, Christine Bray, Lin Carmichael, Gerald Christmas, Rosemary Christmas, Max Coleman, Paul Delprat, Diane Ekholm, John Eldershaw, Suzanne Esterhuyse, Margot Freiman, Ernie Gerzabek, Chick Gordon, John Grant.
